Halloween is right around the corner and while Halloween can be so much fun for most kids and parents, it can be a high stress holiday for a parent whose child has a food allergy. But you can help make Halloween a little more fun and a little less stressful for these families but participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project.
The Teal Pumpkin Project is a simple way to make trick-or-treating safer and more inclusive for children with food allergies. Placing a teal pumpkin on your doorstep signals that, in addition to candy, you offer non-food trinkets and treats that are safe for all trick or treaters.
How will trick-or-treaters know that you’re participating? To let trick-or-treaters know you’re participating, you can paint a pumpkin teal, buy a teal pumpkin or print out a poster from the FARE website to hang on your door. https://www.foodallergy.org/resources/free-teal-pumpkin-project-resources
What kind of trinkets make a good non-allergy item? The dollar store and party supply stores carry lots of fun options that are inexpensive and won’t break the bank. Some ideas are:
- Glow Sticks
- Pencils
- Stickers
- Bubbles
- Spider Rings
- Mini Notebooks
The Teal Pumpkin project is a great way to make Halloween safe and fun! Will you be participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project this year?
